The shape of the mask on this film poster seems to change
into the outline of a knife towards the bottom; this helps the audience
identify the type of the movie, which is a slasher horror. The mask is white to
be the binary opposite of the black background; this could signify the good and
evil throughout the film and is used to make the other stand out even more. The
white used for the mask raises questions although as this colour represents
innocence which would not be used for the villain whose mask this is as it
changes into a pointed knife.
The mask used on this film poster is not shown to be completely
white as though its face is slightly dirty, this helps relate the villain idea
to the white innocence colour as it suggests that this suggestion has been
messed up/made not innocent by the person who is wearing it, this could suggest
this characters future actions throughout the film. Half of the mask is also
shown shadowed to reflect the edge of a knife. The holes for the eyes and mouth
are seemingly black holes adding to the scary idea that this mask is hiding the
identity of the villain who is going to be praying on the main characters. The black background of the film poster helps
to further the idea of the fear of the unknown as it hides the identity of the
villain which is the character who is clearly wearing this mask, this causes
the audience to release from this poster that a large part in the narrative is
the idea that the villain is unknown and a lot of the film is based on the
characters finding out who this is.
The mask is placed within the centre of the layout as this
causes the audience’s attention to be drawn straight to this object and then
there eyes would be directed down the knife-like bottom of the mask to the
title of the film at the bottom of the poster. The mask also seems to have a
glow in front of it, this helps to highlight this object and to suggest that
much of the film takes place within the dark but the villain wearing this mask
seems to be at home within the dark as it is lighting it’s way.
